Video might be an underused medium in employee communicatiomns. I recently completed my first independent video project with Final Cut Pro and it made me wonder why I rarely used video to produce employee communications. Final Cut is an amazing program. Simply, there is nothing you can’t do. Should Final Cut be more “visible” in corporate America?
CEO videos are an important part of employee communications and they are very time consuming for everyone. And, the politics of production can be intense. Like all other CEO-activities, a lot of people are involved and everyone wants to make sure their contribution is exceptional — and visible. Communications managers and directors that have done the work must allow VPs, SVPs and EVPs to take center stage. Such as life. But, getting credit for good work and getting better at internal communications might be two separate goals.
At the early stages of a communications career, much attention is paid to the quality of work. The final product is the measuring stick – so it should always be perfect. New programs are allowing us to improve the final product. Learn them. Know them. Even if you are fortunate enough to work for an organization with its own internal production company, understand the capacity of the programs. Better yet, get to know the people who are shooting the interview and the people who are editing the video AND the people that are audio specialists. You’ll be glad you did.
